A homeowner planning to age in place can pick any horizontal or vertical bar position within the blocked zone and hit solid wood on every screw. Standard blocking heights run from 32 to 38 inches above the finished floor for horizontal bars near the toilet, and from the tub deck to 48 inches inside the shower.

Retrofitting blocking into an existing bathroom means opening the wall from the back side or removing tile from the front. Neither option is cheap. Adding blocking during framing costs the price of a few 2x8s and 20 minutes of labor, while the same work after tile installation can run into the thousands.

Homeowners planning a home improvement project should tell the contractor exactly where grab bars might go in the next 10 or 20 years. Mark the blocking locations on the framing with a permanent marker before the drywall goes on, and take photos with a tape measure in the shot. Those photos save hours of hunting later and confirm which screws will land in solid wood.
